UNUSUAL & RARE, ECHIUM helps Bees gather pollen which in turn helps pollenate other plants to prosper in your own & surrounding gardens plus Birds & directly you shall be helping the Gower Bird Hospital & Hedgehog Hospital & getting rare plus beautiful pinnacles of Blue flowers in your garden.
WE GROW OURS AS PIC SHOWS on Gower Peninsula in South Wales, & do not use quality earth or composts, or Plant food unless it spills on these when feeding nearby plants, plus we have not so far used protecting fleece or bubble wrapping to protect in Cold weather, Others may have to protect in low temperature frosts.
When an ECHIUM PININANA flowers it can run for 3 or 4 or even more months in bloom, some trying to sell these try to convince people they are biennial, however in many cases these will be triennial, they are choosy plants & have to choose their own season to progress.
Canary Islands plants, a dramatic spectacular display Echium, with stunning flower-spikes towers above most plants.
Echium chooses it's own time to grow influenced by season state & when flowering the gatherer bees at work shall be distinctly heard on each plant.
Echium is best described as half-hardy it will need some protection in the North of Great Britain plus Inland areas hit hardest by frost.
Some in those areas cover well with horticultural fleece and/or bracken and straw, particularly around the lower stem and roots, we have never protected it here in WALES.
It will withstand temperatures down to 26°F - 25°F (-3°C to -4°C) often it is not the cold that kills it but wet winter roots which it abhors.
Play safe in very cold areas by over-wintering starting potted plants in a cool greenhouse, conservatory or on a well lit windowsill with temperature of around 7C (45F). Plant out potted plants the following spring into sunny sites with well-drained soil, a reflecting warm wall which can also protect them later from high winds when it becoming large is VERY useful.
In south Britain ECHIUM flourishes well in SOUTH WALES, Gower Pembrokeshire, Devon, Cornwall, SW Ireland it is now seen almost everywhere.
Leaves and stems have prickly hairs which can cause skin irritation so take care when times come to cut them down.

Roughly 25 seeds will cost just £1.99 SO, WITH CARE YOU COULD CHEAPLY HAVE PLANTS LIKE THIS WHILST HELPING CREATURES WHICH NEED HELP, (Cost seen is to be plus Packing & Postage).
**(a few seeds from last year are already planted this early June, so if they come up strongly enough you can buy those individuals for the same Charities)
They take 3 years to grow & turn into a pinnacle of thousands of Blue Flowers which usiually lasts almost the entire summer making it worth waiting for Echium to mature.
Our Super Foxglove seeds will also be recovered later thru the summer to benefit the same Charities.
It helps the Bees, Butterflies, Moths & Bats chasing Moths, Birds naturally benefit in the chain while other plants in the Garden simply become more easily pollinated & more flowers get prepared as a result. A 10 ft tall one is regarded as tiny & 14 ft is the normal size, many like some of ours have become larger, being tall they do not need a huge space.
This is only just being launched after the staff of the Bird Hospital, whilst busy as ever, after a Blackbird became badly injured in my garden, beyond my reach in the Bushes, 'rushed over & helped recover him & get painkillers to the poor bird, (fingers crossed,) he is far from certain to survive but those people still rushed here & recovered him & transferred him gently to their Hospital.
ABOVE IS some full grown Echiums at their 3 yrs Flowering, plus a just over 2 years one in the foreground which does not feel ready to go yet.
Below potted plants around 18 months, however the Echium itself chooses when to 'go for; growing tall to flower, after a determined season flowering the wonderful plants dies back after a LONG flowering with it's shallow roots it is no problem or difficulty removing, just put another Echium plant there, they do not need fancy foods or excessive watering, ours have withstood winter temperatures of 5 C below Zero & yet we see these being grown in the EDEN Project & Botanical Gardens of Wales, indoors!!, climates have changed somewhat!.
We shall be saving the seeds from this mighty Foxglove for our own use as well.
Froggy has a look around & Sally Pussycat is just having a snooze, you can download the Donation Form by using the right click on the mouse "Print Picture" will appear in the box so click that & you have a form.
Sid & Doris Frog, one left one right I do believe one arrived here believed by all to be a Toad when Aimy Dobbin was moving house & brought us a refugee in a watering can!.
'It' was later called 'Toadette' when some youngsters appeared in the puddle & later with generations the same colour, they do not always dive under when approached by humans.
